Brasileno Adriano de Souza, 22, claimed his first ASP World Tour win yesterday at the Billabong Pro Mundaka.
His hard-earned victory came after taking down 9-time ASP World Champ Kelly Slater (USA) in the semi-finals and seasoned World Tour vet Chris Davidson (AUS).
“I don’t have words to express how happy I am right now,” De Souza said. “I have been working so hard for this ever since winning the ASP World Junior Championships and the ASP WQS. To finally win here in Mundaka, where the culture is so rich and the people love surfing so much, is an incredible thing. This is the most special day of my life.”
Adriano de Sauza goes down in the history today as the first South American to claim the Billabong Pro Mundaka. Even more incredible, de Sauza's victory lands him in 3rd place on the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings - changing everything as he becomes a serious contender for the 2010 World Title!
“I’m not thinking about the world title right now,” De Souza said. “I am just enjoying my win..."
Well, I for one am thinking about the World Title as we prepare for event #9 - the Rip Curl Pro Search in Peniche, Portugal from October 19 – 28, 2009.
